New York Tops List as Most Expensive State to Own a Car
A recent study by The Barnes Firm has identified New York as the most expensive state for car ownership in the United States. The study evaluated all 500 states, taking into account insurance prices, fuel costs, repair expenses, and speeding fines. New York secured the top spot with a composite score of 93.19, driven by high insurance rates and sunstantial fines.
The comprehensive analysis revealed that New York car owners face the highest average annual costs for full insurance coverage at $3,672, and minimum coverage at $1,585. Additionally, the state’s average annual fuel expenditure stands at $2,531 and the average repair cost is $417. Speeding fines in New York are also among the highest in the country, averaging $300.
Nevada ranks as the second most expensive state for car owners, with a composite score of 85.89. The state is notable for having the highest speeding fine in the nation at $705. The average costs for full and minimum insurance coverage in Nevada are $3,004 and $962, respectively. Car owners in Nevada also face annual fuel costs of $2,940 and repair costs of $429.
On the flip side, Ohio’s car owners benefit from the lowest overall costs in several categories. The state’s average annual cost for full insurance coverage is $1,023, and minimum coverage costs $328, both of which are among the lowest in the country. Additionally, Mississippi’s average annual fuel expenditure is $1,850, and the average repair cost is $362.
