If you’ve ever watched a show with commercials, you’ve probably heard of Liberty Mutual. With their catchy ads, it’s no wonder that Liberty Mutual has become a popular auto insurance option. So, let’s dig into what sets Liberty Mutual apart, shall we?
In this article
What is Liberty Mutual Insurance?
The Boston-based company has been around since 1912. Liberty Mutual is an insurance company that offers both personal and commercial insurance products. You can purchase auto and vehicle insurance for everything from your car or motorcycle to ATVs, antique cars, RVs, and boats. Liberty Mutual also offers property insurance and other types of insurance, including life insurance, accident insurance, pet insurance, and more.
You can begin Liberty Mutual’s quote process after visiting their website.
After submitting your zip code, you’ll move onto the first page of the quote process.
Here, you can expect a pop-up window to appear. Liberty Mutual is just letting you know that you’ll receive a discount if you purchase your auto policy online.
Liberty Mutual will ask you to fill out your address, name, and birthdate so the system can calculate your quote. You’ll also need to enter your email address so that Liberty Mutual can email you a copy of your quote once you’ve finished the quote process.
Next, Liberty Mutual will use this information to search for your vehicle information.
According to the website, this is how Liberty Mutual obtains your vehicle information:
“This information has been gathered from the Department of Motor Vehicles or your current insurance carrier through a secure third party. There are times when vehicles displayed are not yours or should not be included, which happens most often if you’ve recently moved.”
For the record, Liberty Mutual did find the correct vehicle for me. I moved a few weeks before obtaining this quote, and no other vehicles showed up in my quote. You can select or unselect any vehicles that Liberty Mutual has listed, and you can also add other vehicles if necessary.
After you’ve confirmed your vehicle(s), Liberty Mutual may automatically apply a discount to your quote based on your vehicle’s standard features. You can also review safety features and select your vehicle's features. If your vehicle has the safety features listed, you may be eligible for further discounts from Liberty Mutual.
You’ll also be asked to submit other information about your vehicle, including its fuel type, when you bought it, and roughly how many miles you drive it each year.
Next, Liberty Mutual will offer the opportunity to enroll in the RightTrack program. The company offers a discount for enrolling in the program and may allow you to save up to 30% off your insurance premium, depending on your results. You can enroll your vehicle(s) in the program or decline to enroll if you’d rather not participate.
I selected the “No, thanks” option and declined the offer to enroll my car into the program. Instead of taking me to the next screen, Liberty Mutual offered me another chance to enroll.
Since I decided to continue without the discount, I was brought to the next step of the quote process.
Like the vehicles, Liberty Mutual also attempts to find the appropriate drivers for your vehicle(s) and address. If the information Liberty Mutual provides is incorrect or is missing a driver that you want to add to your insurance quote, you can input the correct and complete driver information.
This is the time when Liberty Mutual asks for your phone number. By entering your phone number, you are giving Liberty Mutual consent to call or text you to discuss your quote further. Liberty Mutual also clarifies that you may receive automatically dialed calls at the number you provide.
I decided not to provide my phone number. Unfortunately, it did not allow me to continue the online quote without it. If you decide not to provide your phone number, the only option is to call Liberty Mutual for a quote.
If you provide your phone number to continue the online quote process, the next step is to review your current auto insurance policy (if you have one.) As you can probably guess, Liberty Mutual also pulls this information to show you what you currently have.
If the auto insurance information it pulls is incorrect, you can click the “Edit” button. This will allow you to select whether you currently have auto insurance, when the policy began if you did, and your current policy’s Bodily Injury Limit.
If you edit this information, you’ll still be able to select whether you have other policies with Liberty Mutual. You can also change your desired policy start date via the drop-down menu.
Finally, Liberty Mutual will give you an estimated price after all that.
The estimated price already includes the discounts that Liberty Mutual can offer based on the information gathered during the quote process. These were my discounts:
Before you finalize your price, you can review and edit the coverages included in your policy.
Each drop-down menu expands the coverage options included in your quote and provides a brief description of each coverage type.
Although Liberty Mutual includes the most popular coverage options in your initial quote, you can edit them.
Updating these options can affect the price of your quote. Each time you change one of the selections, Liberty Mutual will adjust your estimated price.
Liberty Mutual is already one step ahead if you’re feeling lost or nervous about choosing the right options. I received this pop-up while playing around with the coverage options.
If you decide that Liberty Mutual is right for your auto insurance, you can click “Finalize my price.” You’ll need to finalize a few details before purchasing the policy.
You can also save your quote and come back to it later.
Overall, Liberty Mutual’s online quote process is pretty straightforward. It pulled the correct details about myself and my vehicle. The only incorrect information it inputted was my homeownership status.
If you decide to get an online quote, just be aware that if you step away from the computer (or other devices) during the process, you may return to find that your session has timed out. When this happened, I had to input my email address and birthdate to access my quote again. It kept the information I had already entered into the forms, but for some reason, it said I had two vehicles instead of one. It also didn’t allow me to select the year I purchased my car — information required to move on to the next page — so I had to start the quote process over.
What affects the cost of Liberty Mutual auto insurance?
As tedious as it may seem, Liberty Mutual’s quote process is necessary to get an accurate cost for your policy. This is because the cost of your auto insurance policy is calculated based on several factors.
Your driving record
By selling you an auto insurance policy, any insurance company takes on a certain level of risk. Your driving record can tell an insurance company a lot about the risk they may take. You may be eligible for a lower insurance rate if you have a clean driving record with no serious accidents or traffic violations. A history of accidents or traffic violations won’t automatically mean you can’t get insurance, but your insurance rate may be higher.
Your vehicle
All those questions about your vehicle are there because the type of vehicle you drive can impact your likelihood of making an insurance claim. You could have a brand-new car that costs more to replace than an old one unless it is a classic car. An off-road vehicle requires different coverage, as well. Safety features that make it safer to drive and easier to avoid accidents can help lower the cost of your insurance rate.
Insurance companies may also consider the overall safety record for the type of vehicle you drive. If your car is more likely to cause damage in an accident or to be stolen, this may increase your insurance rate.
Your location
Each state requires minimum auto insurance. Depending on where you live, you may need more or less coverage to comply with your state's requirements.
Your area's average cost of living can also affect your insurance rate. You can expect any insurance company to consider your area's average cost of medical care and car repairs when determining your rate. The rates of accidents, thefts, and vandalism in your area can also increase or decrease your insurance rate.
Liberty Mutual’s auto insurance coverage
Medical payments coverage
If you get hurt in an accident, this coverage will pay for your medical expenses, no matter who was at fault. It will also cover passengers in your vehicle during the accident. Additionally, any family member who lives with you can benefit from this coverage if they are injured as a pedestrian or when riding in another person’s car.
While this coverage can cover things like transportation in an ambulance and a hospital stay immediately following your accident, it doesn’t cover everything. Liberty Mutual clarifies that this part of your auto insurance coverage should not be relied on as a substitute for health insurance.
Uninsured motorist coverage
There are two types of uninsured motorist coverage — uninsured motorist bodily coverage and uninsured motorist property damage coverage. This type of coverage is required in some states.
Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage will help pay for the cost of any injuries that you sustain if you’re involved in an accident in which the at-fault driver does not have auto insurance.
Uninsured motorist property damage coverage will help pay for your vehicle’s repairs if you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. While it is required in some states, Liberty Mutual may not be able to offer this type of coverage in every state.
Personal injury protection for you
This can help pay for medical expenses beyond your care immediately following an accident. It generally covers hospital bills, medication, rehabilitation costs, and prostheses.
Some states require personal injury protection coverage. Liberty Mutual will include it in your quote if your state requires it.
Bodily injury liability
If you cause an automobile accident, this coverage will pay for the costs of medical treatment for injured people. If you are sued for damages, your bodily injury liability coverage can also provide legal defense.
Most states require a minimum amount of bodily injury liability coverage.
Property damage coverage
If your vehicle causes damage to someone else’s vehicle or their other property, you can use this coverage to help cover the cost of repairing or replacing the damaged property.
Personal injury protection for others
Personal injury protection coverage can also cover the medical expenses of others involved in an accident with your vehicle.
Collision
Collision insurance coverage can help pay for repairing or replacing your vehicle after it is damaged in an accident, no matter who caused the accident. This coverage applies whether you get into an accident with another vehicle or an inanimate object such as a guardrail or a tree.
Comprehensive
This could help cover the costs of repairing your vehicle if the damage was caused by something other than a collision. Some examples of non-collision situations include storms, floods, fire, theft, and vandalism.
Liberty Mutual offers several additional coverage options, including:
Lifetime repair guarantee
New car replacement
Better car replacement
Rental car reimbursement
Towing & labor (24-hour roadside assistance)
Gap coverage
Original parts replacement
Teachers car insurance
Mexico car insurance

Geico is another top insurance company for auto and other insurance products. Like Liberty Mutual, it offers several coverage options at competitive rates. GEICO also offers rideshare insurance, which can replace your personal auto insurance policy if you are a rideshare driver.
Allstate offers a variety of coverage in addition to other perks. You can enroll in the Drivewise program to earn discounts based on your driving habits. This is similar to Liberty Mutual’s RightTrack program. Allstate also offers discounts from partner companies on things like fire safety products, home maintenance services, and more.
Liberty Mutual provides auto insurance coverage for almost any situation that you could imagine. You can customize your policy to ensure it meets your needs before finalizing the purchase.
Customers who want personalized assistance
Liberty Mutual’s website provides information about coverage options and discounts at every step of the quote process. If you have questions before finalizing your policy, getting help is as simple as clicking a button.
Good drivers
Liberty Mutual’s RightTrack programs could be beneficial if you’re typically a safe driver. These programs track how much you drive, your braking and acceleration habits, and more throughout a 90-day review period. After the review period, you may be eligible for a discount that is awarded based on your results.
Who shouldn’t use Liberty Mutual?
Uber, Lyft, or other rideshare drivers
Liberty Mutual offers a wide range of insurance coverage, but rideshare insurance isn’t one of them.
Pros and cons of Liberty Mutual
Pros
Discounts. Liberty Mutual offers all sorts of discounts, including those for military service members, homeowners, and good students. Bundling your car insurance with home insurance, renters insurance, and even business insurance can save you money. Your car can also earn you a discount if it’s a hybrid or electric vehicle, if it has anti-theft technology, and if it has advanced safety features. You can also earn discounts for having an accident-free and violation-free history, purchasing a policy for multiple vehicles, and more.
Cons
Can be more expensive if you don’t want to enroll in programs. Liberty Mutual seems to rely heavily on its customers enrolling in the RightTrack program to earn a discount. If you don’t want to enroll in the program, your quote may not beat competitor pricing.
