The recent layoffs and the requirement to be present at the office may have put you off working from home, whether for yourself or someone else.

Being your own boss can still be an option, though you may want to be out of the confines of your home to earn a living.

If being at home nonstop no longer gets you excited about working, here are some self-employed jobs that can provide more human interaction while enjoying being outside.

With many gyms closed or limiting people inside, being a personal trainer who works from home or travels to clients’ houses can be profitable.

Finding clients may be the most difficult part. You’ll also need liability insurance, and continuing education to maintain certification from a nationally accredited organization such as the American Council on Exercise or the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

2. Massage Therapist

This is another wellness type of job that can pay better if you travel to clients’ homes.

You’ll need a portable table, towels, sheets and a few other things to have a mobile business. And of course you’ll need schooling and licensing for massage therapy from your state.

3. Cleaning

This may not be the perfect job away from your home, but cleaning someone else’s home can be profitable.

With some basic cleaning supplies and a big enough car to carry them in, you can provide a service that clients can find invaluable. Some may want you to clean their entire home weekly, or work on a few problem areas at a time such as a basement or spare bedroom that has gotten out of control.

4. Tour guide

Living in or near a popular vacation spot can be the main incentive you need to be a tour guide. Biking, walking and driving tours are popular, and can be led as a side gig as a fun way to continue exploring a city you love.

You can go with the standbys of giving tours of museums or city monuments, or can expand to unique tours such as food tours of certain areas or nighttime tours of interesting lighting.

Start by showing friends around and use social media and your local tourism office to promote your tours.

5. Home staging

Smart real estate agents are always looking for good home stagers to make a home look its best so it can attract the highest price.

Home stagers rent furniture or use existing pieces to arrange in a way that makes a home look like the perfect place to live. And buy.

Online advertising, social media, referrals from home sellers and their agents, and networking with other professionals can help you grow a business.

6. Cook

People who enjoy cooking can turn their passion into profit. From sit-down meals with everything needed to feed a family of six, to specializing in birthday cakes and fancy desserts, a good cook can work as a personal chef or catering business.

Host dinner parties in your home to get started. Invite a few friends over and pass out your business card, or provide samples at a stand at your local farmer’s market. Also be sure to have a website with professional photos of your dishes.

7. Tutor

Tutoring in your home or someone else’s can use skills that you may not realize are worth selling.

Remember writing interesting and “A” graded essays in college? You could tutor high school juniors and seniors on writing college application letters.

Or were you so good in your math or science classes that you aced them without much work? You could be a lot of help to students struggling with those subjects now and help them prepare for college entrance tests.

Tutoring companies can help you find a job. Expertise in a subject or grade level will help you establish yourself as an expert tutor.

8. Park ranger

A park ranger may be the ultimate job if you love working outdoors. A college degree is usually required, and a relevant major is helpful. If you majored in areas related to conservation, biology, botany, ecology, forestry, earth science, and anthropology, then the U.S. National Park Service could use you.

Job responsibilities include protecting wildlife, providing tours and information to visitors, law enforcement, and working in a visitor’s center.

9. Cruise ship entertainer

Singing, dancing, performing a magic act and other types of entertainment can be paid gigs on cruise ships.

You’ll have to live on a cruise ship for awhile, of course, but the room will be free and you’ll be paid for your work. Some ships just need older men who are good dancers to keep single female passengers on the dance floor.

If that isn’t in your skill set, cruise ships are often hiring people to work as cooks, wait staff, or in the fitness center, excursion planning department, cleaning and many other areas.
