What is Solitaire Cube?
Solitaire Cube is an app for the phone designed by Tether Studios and part of the Skillz eSports platform of games. It works like regular Klondike Solitaire games, except on this app, you compete against others for cash, and the game moves much faster. Small touches like animations, touch controls, and leaderboards create an interesting gameplay loop with which players can make money online.
Users enter multiplayer tournaments against other players, with winners taking home cash prizes. Solitaire Cube hosts tournaments from $10 up to thousands of dollars per entry.
To begin, players are matched to those with similar skills, so you have a chance to beat your opponent in a fair match.
How does Solitaire Cube work?
Solitaire Cube is available on iOS and Android through the Galaxy Store, or you can download the game directly from the Skillz website. It is worth noting that the version available on Google Play is a single-player game where there aren't any real-money tournaments.
You’ll automatically be set up with an account on your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone to start playing some practice games, which will gauge your skill levels.
You’ll play as you would in traditional Solitaire, creating rows of ascending cards, except in this version, the cards do not need to be in the same suit unless you have selected the Ace card foundation. You’ll have 5 minutes set on a timer to complete your game. The game will alert you if you run out of moves, allowing you to end your game and receive bonus points. If you win your game in less than 5 minutes, you’ll receive bonus points, earning more the faster you win.
Free games (practice league)
Free games can be found in the Practice League. You can build your skills here by playing as many free games as possible. My first practice match didn’t go so well. As the app kept reminding me, not all games can be won, and I got stuck and had to finish. I did get bonus points for finishing early. My second-place showing earned me one Ticketz and 25 Z Coins. With this winning, I had enough to continue: 1 Z Coin was required to enter another game, where I would compete to win 2 Z Coins.
As the game is powered by Skillz games, you’ll receive its virtual currency known as Z Coins and rewards Ticketz for wins. Use your Z Coins to play in more matches for free and collect your Ticketz to redeem for real prizes like home goods, clothing, electronics, and more. I was eyeing the Cuisinart Fondue Pot, which required 1.9 million Ticketz to redeem — but I was well aware that it would take me a lot of games to get to that prize!
After my second game, I had to wait for a player to be matched to my game, so I didn’t immediately win or lose. I was stuck again and ended my game quickly, but my eventual competitor could also get stuck and end with fewer points earned from moving cards. I could enable push notifications to get an alert when my game was complete. However, I was able to continue playing in more competitions.
Real money games (pro league)
If you want to play solitaire for real money, move into the Pro League. This requires a cash deposit to enter tournaments where you will compete with other players, and winners win the pot. You need to ante up to compete and use your skills to outwit and outplay the other competitor to win. These tournaments can get big. For example, Skillz is renowned for running big cash tournaments across its gaming apps, ranging from 21 Blitz to Big Buck Hunter, including a New Year's Eve Blackout Bingo tournament with a $750,000 prize pool. With Solitaire Cube, winning up to $1,000 in two minutes is possible.
